The politicos have been demanding for months that Americans “suck it up,” stop whining, tighten their belts, deal with the realities of unavoidable cuts to social programs, to healthcare programs, to education and pretty much anything and everything that provides any modem of support to a nation crumbling under a devastating economic crash and staggering unemployment. Yes somehow, with an awesome debt of $14.3 trillion hanging like the proverbial albatross from America’s neck, our fearless leaders found a way to ADD $17 billion to the Defense Department budget.

Has anyone stopped to point out to the DOD and our President and our fine, upstanding leaders on the Hill that if they keep this shit up there won’t BE ANYTHING to DEFEND?

What – you’re going to feel all mighty and patriotic defending a land filled with starving, miserable people who have lost hope and no longer give a fuck? It is political grandstanding still. It is territorial pie fighting. It is a very clear indication that the Powers That Be don’t have a fucking clue because I guarantee that THEIR lives will not be impacted by the changes to social security, by eliminating arts and education programs, by slashing and burning health programs. It doesn’t touch them. All they can see is their fucking slice of American money pie. Eat up. You’re serving it over the killing fields layered with the bones of the citizens of this country.

As our esteemed President said today “he's prepared to take "significant heat" from his party over certain elements of the deficit reduction deal he's currently negotiating.” I’m sure he is.

HIS kids won’t go hungry tonight. But hey, that’s okay because as our President pointed out today, ours can “eat peas.”

A 15 year old girl gets a life sentence in Mississippi for the miscarriage of her baby. Georgia tries to pass legislation that would mandate the women would need to PROVE their miscarriages occurred naturally. Extremist anti-abortion groups are pushing to outlaw contraceptives, saying by killing sperm they are committing infanticide. Four states have defunded Planned Parenthood and a new Ohio law bans abortions as early as six weeks without exceptions for rape or incest. Over half the states have introduced fetal homicide laws intended to be used against violent attacks by third parties. Instead the laws have been turned on the pregnant women. In South Carolina, only one case has been brought against a man for assaulting a pregnant woman, while 300 women have been arrested under the same law. In Alabama at least 40 cases have been brought under the state’s “chemical endangerment” law.

Drugs and pregnancy bad. So is smoking and pregnancy. So is alcohol and pregnancy. So is horseback riding and sometimes bike riding and…. Well – there’s a number of things that can endanger a pregnancy. Tripping and falling included. Will women who have miscarriages by any of those means also face jail time? See the thing is this – with cases like the 15 year old girl, there is no proof that she did drugs while pregnant or that she intended to harm her baby. Yes she drank rat poison but with the intent to commit suicide, not murder. Ten years ago she would have been seen as needing psychiatric help. Today they dredge up a 130 year old law that has never been used to throw a CHILD into prison. For life. This is the society we have become.

Women are systematically being shoved back into the dual role of the subservient breeder and the evil destroyer bitch.

When you pile all together the outlandish legislation that has been aggressively shoved to the political forefront by anti-abortion fanatics in the past 8 months; the hostile and often shocking news stories that depict girls and women as willing rape victims (they were asking for it by how they were dressed or where they had the audacity to venture); the subtle (or not) media witch burnings of women that somehow manages to make completely intelligent people forget that we used to be proud of our innocent until proven guilty system of justice; and a very frightening picture begins to emerge. Just as women begin to find an equal place in society where we comprise over half of the workforce, have more advanced college degrees than men, and are shattering the crippling stereotypes and social behavior patterning that have inhibited generations – we suddenly have this unbelievably aggressive attack and vilification of women. I don’t think it is “men” fighting in patriarchal terror, because there are just as many women casting their own gender under the Jezebel bus. I do think it is a desperate fight by narrow-minded religious fanatics who have risen to political power and are now using that power to “set things right” by any means necessary. Their “right” is so very ethically wrong.

Hey if they can legally reinstate witch burnings in Australia in 2010, then I supposed we’re being civilized by throwing our teens into jail for life for having a miscarriage.

“The War on Drugs, which is celebrating its 40th year, has been a colossal failure. It has curtailed personal freedom, created a violent black market, and filled our prisons. It has also trampled on states’ rights: Sixteen states have legalized “medical marijuana” — which is, admittedly, often code for legalizing pot in general — only to clash with federal laws that ban weed throughout the land.”

The canyon of discord between those opposing the legalization of marijuana and those supporting has slowly but steadily narrowed over the past decade, especially recently as the info highway known as the internet has dispelled for some the many myths and outright lies associated with use of the drug. Now to be clear – the federal legislation is NOT mandating that use, distribution and growth of pot be made legal. Instead it is putting it in the hands of the states, which is where it should be. It would however, if passed as proposed, allow those 21 years and older to buy marijuana at licensed outlets. The number of stores per county would be set by the state Liquor Control Board. Also, taxes would be levied by the Liquor Control Board and could net the state an estimated $215 million a year in new revenue. I don’t have a problem with that. I’d rather see the money go into the hands of the states. Plus we tax the shit out of alcohol and tobacco – might as well throw cannabis onto the pile. The proposed measure would apply drunken driving laws to those driving under the influence of marijuana and it would allow qualified people to grow it for medical purposes without being slapped in handcuffs.

Face it. Alcoholism is far more deadly than potism. Terms like “reefer madness” and “lazy pothead” create a misguided social stereotype that keeps people misinformed. We are such suckers for negative spin in America.

Some quicky myths dispelled:

Of the more than 800,000 people are arrested for marijuana each year, the vast majority of them for simple possession., approximately 88 percent were charged with possession only. Them’s a lot of taxpayer court costs right there.
Most marijuana users never use any other illicit drug – it is not a gate-way drug
Most people who use marijuana do so only occasionally. Fewer than 10% of those who try marijuana meet the clinical criteria for dependence, while 32% of tobacco users and 15% of alcohol users do.
Marijuana use has not been shown to increase risk of cancer.
Marijuana has been proven helpful for treating the symptoms of a variety of medical conditions.
Marijuana use rates in the Netherlands are similar to those in the U.S. despite very different policies.
Unlike alcohol, Marijuana has not been shown to cause long-term cognitive impairment and There is no compelling evidence that it contributes substantially to traffic accidents and fatalities.

One of the big questions this raises though is how does it impact the possible legalization of harder drugs... and should it?

Today it’s all things that go bump in the night and for once we aren’t talking about sex.

A nice big giant taboo is the paranormal. Most people get uncomfortable if asked whether they REALLY believe in ghosts or not. It’s okay to love ghost stories, and even okay to say yeah there might be something to that (as long as it’s followed with a depreciative chuckle) but tell people you’ve SEEN a ghost or that you absolutely believe in them… or reincarnation… or anything else related to the paranormal and you get that look. The one that says “you believe in santa claus too”, doncha? In fact, we’ve been taught so well to NOT believe in anything outside the safe boundaries of this reality we stomp around in , that most people who do encounter something outside the norm tend to instantly disbelieve their own senses. Was that….? Nawwww. Did I just see….? Nawwwww. Oh and sugah, definitely don’t run around town yelling “ghosts” with absolute conviction, because society has a nice tidy white cell with your name on it if you do. Well, unless you’re a professional ghost hunter, professional psychic, or a filmmaker (ie. entertainers.)

It is more comfortable for us to deny and discredit than to entertain an unproven possibility. That applies in most things but especially in the area of paranormal. Ironically, as a culture we LOVE to be teased and titillated with stories of ghosts and vamps and aliens and bigfoot and fairies. Horror and fantasy are huge sellers. But that’s okay because we can reassure ourselves that it isn’t real.

The need to have a nice tidy explanation for everything often compels us to either make all things possible or nothing possible. The truth usually lies somewhere in between the extremes. The study of ghosts has taken on not only a popular mantle of entertainment, but also the trappings of very high tech science as ghost hunters track down evidence of altered existence. As with anything, you’ll have your charlatans and fame seekers that keep the doubtfires glowing, but you also have teams of people who sincerely are trying to provide that ever elusive proof that something of us exists beyond death.

A friend told me recently that all that remains are echoes of ourselves. Supernatural experiences can be explained via the science of our very complex brains where the power of suggestion and the mind’s ability to perceive illusionary images where none exist have been proven. But I don’t believe in black and white answers in a grey world. The flip side of the coin is this – while ghosts may not have been proven to exist to the skeptics’ satisfaction, neither have they been disproven to the believers’ satisfaction.

The spook factor definitely keeps life interesting. Especially when you keep company with ghosts.

Let Them Eat… Nothing

An Orlando ordinance restricts food donors to feeding groups of 25 or more two times per year in public spaces. A federal court ruled the ordinance unconstitutional in 2008, deciding that Food Not Bomb's activities are a protected form of free speech. But in April, the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals overturned the earlier ruling. Consequently, members of the activist group who are trying to bring awareness of the plight of the growing number of homeless have been repeatedly arrested for putting their money where hungry mouths are.

This isn’t a problem of those “shiftless vagrants” who are too lazy to get a job and expect the hard-working American public to carry them. My people -you need to grasp this – THAT America, where the middle class were busy pursuing the lovely grail of the American Dream is gone. The people who are homeless – they could easily be your family, your friends, your loved ones… it could just as easily be you. They are not there because they have nothing to offer society. The growing number of homeless are hungry and without homes because our society has collapsed. There aren’t enough jobs. Their homes have been repossessed due to a corrupt system. Some are the handicapped that are now out on the streets, unable to care for themselves because budget cuts have closed the programs we tried to put in place to help them. The consequences of a collapsed economy with not enough jobs have families living in cars, squatting in abandoned homes, sleeping in cardboard boxes, shanty communities, and going hungry while they try to hang on. It’s a vicious catch-22 nightmare that is nearly impossible to climb out of and which our leadership – which we elected - has all but ignored – as if the homeless will vanish if you don’t have to look at them. Now, when we need to REALLY be making aid a priority because the number of homeless is growing like crazy, we are instead allowing laws to be passed that punish anyone trying to help.

This problem will get worse. It will become one of our biggest nightmares. Think back to the great depression when the cries of misery in this country rang so loud that we remember it still, generations later. The recession will force around 2 million people into homelessness over the next year. A recent report cites “major increases in the number of homeless in 19 out of the 25 states.” That doesn’t even take into account the huge numbers of “new adults” that have to sleep on friends’ sofas or stay with parents because they can’t find a job; can’t start their own lives. You know that American Dream of their OWN home, where they can start their OWN family? These young adults are unable to contribute to society due to no fault of their own. They live in limbo. From 2008 to 2009, the number of unemployed in America increased by 60 percent from 8.9 to 14.3 million impacting heavily on the existing homeless situation. Just imagine what that number will be next year and the year after.

Don’t let them snatch food from the mouths of the hungry. Don’t. The scary truth is, unless you are one of the wealthy few, the person that might not be fed tomorrow might be you.

"Welcome to America. You Want Combo?"

Welcome to America. A smorgasbord of opportunity awaits those who relocate to our fine, fat country. America is, after all, the land of the free and home of the Whopper. The numbers are out, rounded-off, so to speak, and the numbers are getting larger. One out of three Americans is obese. Not pudgy or ‘soft’ but obese. To try and put this in context, ponder this a moment: According to the CDC, in 2009 there were 33 states that were greater than or equal to 25% of the population classified as being obese and 9 of those 33 were equal to or greater than 30% of the population classified as being obese.

Talk about a growing population. Now it seems that immigrants to the land of milk and honey are swelling at the same rate as America’s home-grown populace. Apparently, being an American requires one to eat like an American which, in turn, causes one to eventually look like an American … fat and saggy.

America is now one of the world’s most overweight countries. This past week, I was at Disney World and marveled at the irony of the size of the people entering and exiting the ‘It’s a Small World’ attraction. I figure that it only a matter of time until the ‘Small World’ attraction features twirling, dancing and singing robotic obese children. There are those who go as far as to claim that parents of obese children are guilty of child abuse.

Our nation’s thundering herd is being blamed on everything from genetics to media to the workplace and technology. Technology? What does a serving of Google and a side of iPad taste like, anyway?

Truth be known, I suppose blame can be assigned to nearly anything when it comes to the blubbering-up of America, much like almost everything causes cancer. But when it comes down to the meat of the matter, the only cause of America’s population enlargement is a working jawbone. Each of us has one and most of us know how to use it. It’s just that many have no idea how to let the jaws rest.

Yes, welcome to America, brethren from afar. In order better serve you and enhance your experience, please pull around to the window and have your money ready. That’s how we roll in the U. S. of A.

Dear Mayor Dyer,

I was disturbed and disappointed to read your stance on feeding the homeless in Orlando, and your reference to a group feeding needy people as "food terrorists".

At a time when our country faces record unemployment and greater economic problems on a daily basis, with millions homeless in need of assistance, to take a stand such as yours is inhumane and incomprehensible to me. Would America have survived the Great Depression if there had been these limits on helping our fellow citizens had been imposed back then?

It saddens me that someone chosen to lead his community has turned his back so completely on a section of it, simply because they have fallen on hard times. Shame on you, Sir.

Breaking Taboo: The First Divorce – God Ditches His Wife

In the 1960’s a Hebrew inscription on a broken storage jar, found in Sinai and dated from the beginning of the eighth century BCE (Before Common Era) reads: 'I bless you by Yhwh of Samaria and his Asherah.' Lots of other references to Asherah exist and archeologists have been having a field day ever since sorting through the rubble. Why? Because it’s impossible to study humanity and try to grasp the inner workings of mankind without digging into the past.

The evolution of belief systems and our resulting societies… because face it – we are what we believe – is an intricate and endlessly fascinating puzzle. That puzzle has led us to where we are today. The recent news stories about God’s wife, Asherah, may seem like meaningless drivel, but there is in fact a great deal we can learn about our problems today by studying the past. Does it REALLY matter if the Jewish god Yahweh had a consort or wife? Not so much. Beliefs evolve and change over time. They assimilate and toss out what isn’t popular at any given time. Does it matter that all references to her were erased or reworked until she disappeared? Yes, it does actually. Not just as a reminder that history and the stories of a culture are written by the scribes in power (Can you say media megalopoly?) It should raise questions about what is believed to be Religious as well as Cultural Truths. It should raise questions regarding why even in this day and age women are not viewed as equals to men. Just look at the recent spat of legislation being proposed that takes away a woman’s control over her own body – and much of that in the name of religion.

See any resemblance to the ark of the covenent in this Asherah statue?

What we reap today fell long, long ago - perhaps even at the felling of the sacred tree of knowledge that was Asherah – the other half of the ancient dual gendered god Elohim. “Then Elohim said, ‘Let us make man in our image, in our likeness….’

Breaking Taboo - THE THEORY OF EVOLUTION

LAUGHING PHILOSOPHERS STUCK IN THE PRISON OF TIME AND THE THEORY OF EVOLUTION

Roughly five hundred years before anyone decided to make up the arbitrary and silly mythology that is the Jesus Christ concept, a real man rose from Thrace and told us about atomic structure, galactic civilizations and Evolution. His ideas were amazing, considering there was no real science at the time. In fact, the Greek Democritus is known as “the father of Science.” And he was a happy, yet displanted soul, lost in a sea of brutal mediocrity, surrounded by ages of ignorance in all directions of space and time.

He was light years beyond those around him. Democritus wrote prodigious books and papers on philosophy, ethics, and a vast number of other previously unknown scientific disciplines. During his ninety years on the planet, he wrote about Evolution, and his ideas had features similar to Darwin’s theory. This was a man who was a contemporary of Socrates and Plato, and despite Democritus’ writings, racist bigots like Aristotle created the ridiculous color coded ideas of “Fixed Speciation and ‘The Golden Class.” And for reasons unknown…they all hated Democritus’ guts. Maybe they were jealous.

So, why am I telling you about some long dead Greek dude? Because he sat around, without a microscope and knew that Evolution, Astronomy, Biology, Anthropology, and science itself, existed, and that was well over TWO AND A HALF THOUSAND FUCKING YEARS AGO.

Meanwhile, at this very moment in time, Kentucky has something called “The Creation Museum” where the ‘science’ they use, suggests that humans lived with dinosaurs, that the world is only a few thousand years old, and ordering huge saber tooth steaks so heavy they tip over their foot propelled cars was all part of life for the stone age families.

Sometimes I want to scream at kids with Cigarettes, because my mother; who is in her seventies, stopped smoking back in the sixties, the moment they said “Hey, this causes Cancer” some fifty years ago. Why do people still smoke? Well, the same reason people still believe in stupid shit like Creationism and Intelligent Design concepts.

And I might add, ‘concept’ is as far as they go. There is no theory there, not even hypothesis. Those formulas belong to the heady realm of Science. If I say that “Glenn Beck is the Devil,” that’s just an idea. If I say “Glenn Beck is the Devil and that is why the world is going to hell.” and I can prove it - that is a hypothesis. If I can show you empirical evidence of him eating babies and traveling to hell and back on a whorey steed woven from the souls of duped Republican Teabaggers and have photos and video to back it up and seventy million other people saw him too…well…that starts to stray into the ‘theory’ department. But only after strict longitudinal testing.

So, let’s just discount all that bullshit, and not dwell on it. Lets concentrate on allowing our minds to understand Evolution and the broader implications of what math plus matter plus energy plus space plus time; have wrought for us at this stage of the game, some thirteen billion seven hundred million years since some George Carlin lookin dude opened up a can of multiversal whoopass.

Now, most folks want to talk about Evolution in terms of us. Its all about us. That’s known as Anthropogenics, or as I like to call it ‘being selfish Monkeys.’ But the Evolution of humanity and Evolution itself are not just concepts but the provable factual theory that is very fabric of the universe. We move ever forward, entropy destroys, energy creates, and situations make us become. Life is an expression of the universe, just like a black hole or a neutron star, or even Charlie Sheen. Yes, even him.

If I ever get my time machine working again, I plan to go rescue Democritus from his two and a half thousand year deep prison and bring him to an age that can truly appreciate him…chiefly, the twenty ninth century.

UNKOMIK THUNDER

GHOST HUNTER - NEW from ELLORA'S CAVE!

I'm so excited to announce I have a new book out with Ellora's Cave! It's a paranormal romance called GHOST HUNTER, and it's got a hunky hero, a kick-ass heroine and a serial killing ghost that's scary as hell! Not to mention a smokin' hot cover!

I love when I come up with an idea for a book out of the blue, which is what happened with GHOST HUNTER. When I heard my local RWA chapter set up a lecture with a team of paranormal investigators, it got me thinking right away about writing a book about a ghost hunter. Because the chapter is far from where we live, though, we didn't actually go to the lecture. I was a little bummed about that, especially since they were giving out EMF detectors. On second thought, maybe it was better we didn't go. Ghosts freak me out, so having something that can detect them probably wouldn't be a good idea.

Enough about me, back to the story behind the story. While I knew the hero was a ghost hunter named Trace, I wasn't quite sure how the heroine fit into the story, or even who she was. So, my hubby and I played around with a few ideas at our local PF Chang's (we come up with a lot of story ideas there!) We both decided that having the heroine Cassidy need the hero's help because her house was haunted or something like that didn't seem original enough, so we made her a budding romance writer who tags along with the hero and his team to do some research. Like any good story, though, it had to have some conflict, which is why Trace and Cassidy completely rub each other the wrong way right from the beginning. Actually, he thinks he's a jerk. But don't worry, Cassidy discovers underneath that rough ghost hunter exterior, Trace is just the man she's been looking for. It doesn't hurt that he's hot!

Okay, so we had our hero and heroine. Now we needed a bad guy. That's where the ghost comes in. He's not your standard, everyday ghost, though. He's a serial killer who attacked Cassidy that comes back from the grrave to continue his string of grisly murders, and she's at the top of his list. To make things even more interesting, not only can he do all the regualar ghostly stuff like walk through walls and materialize out of thin air, he can also take solid form.

I'm not going to tell you any more than that, though. Don't want to give too much away, you know. I will add that my editor at Ellora's Cave told me she got so caught up in the story, she completely forgot she was reading a submission!

Trace has to keep Cassidy close to keep her safe, and as they try to stay one step ahead of the ghost while figuring out how to stop it, he and Cassidy end up in each other’s arms. While Trace has a whole list of reasons why he shouldn’t get involved with her, he finds himself falling in love with the beautiful blonde anyway. And even though Cassidy started out thinking he was a jerk, she learns that underneath the rough ghost hunter exterior, he’s just the man she’s always been looking for. Now, all they have to do, is live long enough to be together.

EXCERPT:

Trace was only a few miles from the address Robert had given him for Cassidy when his cell phone rang. At first he wasn’t going to answer it, but some sixth sense made him change his mind. Now he was glad he had.

He was about to disconnect the call when he heard a muffled scream on the other end of the line. It was quickly followed by a loud clatter, then nothing.

“Cassidy!”

No answer.

Trace felt his chest tighten. Swearing under his breath, he shoved his cell phone in the pocket of his jeans and floored the pedal on the Hummer, running a red light to get through the intersection. The other drivers honked their horns as they squealed to a stop, but he ignored them. There was no way he was going to let Cassidy die.

Five minutes later, he slid into the parking lot outside her apartment, running over an ornamental fence and a flower bed to come to a screeching halt a few feet from the front door. Jumping out of the Hummer, he ran around to the back and grabbed his duffel bag full of gear. Throwing it over his shoulder, he raced up the steps and charged through the door into the building, scaring the hell out of two women carrying laundry baskets.

“Where the hell are the stairs?” he demanded, not wanting to waste time with the elevator.

The women timidly pointed around the corner.

Trace didn’t thank them as he ran in that direction. He hit the steps hard, taking them hree at a time. Once on the fourth floor, he ran down the hall, checking the room numbers on he doors. When he came to the right one, he didn’t even bother to slow down. Instead, he icked the door in as hard as he could, reaching into his bag for his shotgun as the frame plintered and the door flew open.

He looked left and right as he entered the apartment, but there was no sign of Cassidy or el Vecchio. Trace’s blood ran cold at the scene that met his eyes. The living room looked s if a cyclone hit it. The couch and throw pillows were sliced to shreds, stuffing still floating hrough the air. The coffee table was lying on its side, as were the two end tables, and the amps that had been on them were smashed to pieces along with practically everything ele in the place. Even the walls had been slashed.

“Cassidy?” Trace called.

“In here.”

Trace followed the sound of her voice until he came to the kitchen. Cassidy was standing in the center of the room inside a wobbly drawn circle of salt, ready to throw a handful of something in his face. She sagged with relief at the sight of him, letting the stuff in her hand trickle out onto the floor. That was when he realized she was holding a big container of oregano.

“Is he gone?” she whispered.

Trace nodded. “Yeah, he’s gone. But I’m getting you the hell out of here anyway.”

He didn’t wait for an answer, but simply slung the shotgun over his shoulder by the strap, then walked into the kitchen and swung Cassidy up in his arms.

She put one of her own around his neck. “Is it safe for me to leave the circle?”

“Yes. I’ll keep you safe. Trust me.”

Apparently she must have believed him because she didn’t resist. She cuddled the container of oregano close to her body and leaned against his chest.

He frowned. “Cassidy, you did great with the salt circle. It saved your life without a doubt. But what are you doing with the oregano?”

She looked up at him with big, blue eyes. “Isn’t it what you used to get rid of ghosts?”

His mouth twitched. “That’s sage and garlic. You can ditch the spaghetti spice.”

“Oh,” was all she said. Resting her head on his shoulder, she let the container of oregano tumble to the floor, then put that arm around his neck, too.

Giving the place one more look to make sure Del Vecchio hadn’t come back, Trace carried her out of the apartment and right passed the alarmed neighbors who had come out into the hallway to see what the ruckus was all about. Trace imagined they got their money’s worth seeing a big guy with a shotgun and a duffel bag slung over his shoulder carrying a beautiful half-naked woman in his arms. He abruptly realized he probably should have taken a few minutes to let Cassidy grab some clothes. But then the lights in the hallway flickered and he decided he could get her clothes later. They were getting the hell out of there.

“Is she being kidnapped?” one elderly woman asked another in a low voice as he and Cassidy passed them.

“If she is,” said the other old woman, “then I want to want to be kidnapped next.”

Any other time, Trace would have laughed, but right now all he wanted to do was get Cassidy someplace safe. Fortunately, he knew exactly where to take her.

Get DEAD SEXY and Show a Zombie Some Love!

Thanks so much for letting me guest blog today!

Readers often ask me how I come up with ideas for my books, so I thought I'd give you a little behind-the-scenes peek at how I came up with my new release, a paranormal erotic romance from Ellora's Cave called DEAD SEXY.

Before I say anything else though, isn't that cover too hot for words?! When the art department sent it to me, I probably gazed at it for a good ten minutes in mouth-drooling appreciation before I could email them back telling the artist it not only rocked, but totally fit the book. The hero is "Dead Sexy," after all!

Okay, back to the story and how I came up with it. First, to set the stage, I need to share a little something with you about myself. Well, about my hubby and me, actually. We love zombie movies, from the George Romero gems to Shaun of the Dead and everything in between, including "Walking Dead," the new series on AMC. You just can't go wrong with a movie full of walking dead people, can you? Well, if you've ever seen a zombie movie (or even you haven't), then you know the creatures aren't the heroes of the film. I mean, how can they be, right? They're all dead and decayed and downright unattractive, not to mention pretty damn scary. Which was why you can imagine my surprise when my hubby suggested I write an erotic romance about a zombie hero. I was like, you're kidding, right? What woman in her right mind would fall in love with a dead guy? No way could that possibly work, or so I thought.

Turns out, my hubby wasn't kidding. In fact, he started working up ideas for the story.

"The hero didn't have to be a zombie all the time," he told me. "Think outside the box - take a little literary license!"

Okay, I thought. I suppose I could be open minded.

My hubby told me that in his out-of-the-box world, the hunky hero got cursed by an evil Voodoo priestess and only turns into a zombie sometimes.

"I'm listening," I said.

"And when he does go zombie, he doesn't have to be like the kind in the movies," my hubby added. "Well, he has to look like one, you know all dead and stuff, but he doesn't have to be a mindless creature or attack humans or eat anything gross."

So, brains are completely out, thanks goodness!

"Think Jensen Ackles or Jared Padelecki, with a really, really, really dark tan - (yes, my hubby knows I've got a thing for the Supernatural hunks!) - well, maybe more gray and black than tan, but you get the idea."

I thought about that for a minute. "So, the hero's dead, but he's still sexy, is that what you're saying?"

"Exactly," he said, giving me a grin as my eyes lit up with understanding.

By that point, my hubby had pretty much sold me on the idea. Of course, I knew if I ran with it, I was going to have to sell it to a publisher, and I knew that could be tough since the hero is a zombie. But I ran with it anyway and ended up with a full-length novel. And it came out pretty damn good, if I do say so myself! I still had to find a publisher for it, though.

About this same time, It just so happens that several of my other books were in the process of being picked up by Ellora's Cave and I thought what the heck? Why not pitch it to my editor there and see what she thinks? So I did, and she told me to send it to her. She was interested to see how I handled the whole zombie-thing. Well, long story, short, she liked it. A lot! My zombie romance with it's dead-sexy hero had a home! I was thrilled and my hubby walked around for a week with a smug, "I-told-you-so" look on his face.

I've been getting the word out there about DEAD SEXY ever since I signed the contract for it and I'm thrilled with the interest from readers who can't wait to get their hands on it! I can't wait for them to read it, too!

Now that I've revealed the story behind the story, I thought I'd share the blurb and an excerpt just to whet your appetite for more!

Blurb:

Romance author Simone Kent thinks she might just have found the most perfect guy in all of New York City - in bed and out. But Drake Parrish is about as far from perfect as any man can get. Eight years ago, he was cursed by an evil Voodoo priestess to live part of his life as a zombie. Since then, he has lived like a recluse on New York’s Upper East Side, afraid to go out for fear he’ll suddenly turn into one of the walking dead.

The sex is the hottest either of them has ever experienced and Simone discovers just how naughty she can be with Drake, while he finds himself feeling things for her that he hasn’t felt in a very long time. When the Voodoo priestess learns of their relationship, however, she comes after him again. She is determined to make sure he won’t have a future with Simone, even if that means killing both him and the woman he loves.

Excerpt:

As she led him up the steps to the second floor, Drake found himself wondering if she would ask him in. And wondering what he’d say if she did. When they came to a stop outside the door to her apartment, Simone turned to give him a smile.

“I had a great time tonight.”

“Me, too.”

She caught her bottom lip between her perfect white teeth and chewed on it thoughtfully as if unsure what she wanted to say next. It was probably an unconscious gesture, something she did whenever she was thinking, but to him, it was sexy as hell and all he could think about was kissing her.

Surely, one kiss couldn’t hurt. He desperately wanted to. He hadn’t kissed a woman in so long. It would be nice to see if he still remembered how.

Before he could stop himself, Drake tilted Simone’s face up to his and pressed his mouth to hers.

She tasted just as sweet and delicious as he thought she would. Her lips were soft and pliant under his as she kissed him back, her tongue eagerly seeking his out.

Drake groaned and slid his hand into her hair, deepening the kiss. Simone sighed into his mouth, running her hands up the front of his shirt to grasp his shoulders. The feel of her touch was like a tonic to his deprived soul and he let out another groan, deeper this time.

He ran his free hand up her side and around to her breast, cupping it through the soft material of her dress. He couldn’t stop himself and apparently, Simone didn’t want him to. She moaned and arched against him. He could feel the heat of her pussy through their clothes as she pressed up against his hard cock. Damn, she felt good.

Drake drew her bottom lip into his mouth and gently suckled on it before slowly kissing his way along the delicate curve of her jaw. Simone clutched his shoulders and tilted her head back. He eagerly trailed a path of hot kisses down her neck, then back up, his mouth finding hers again. Simone looped her arms around his neck, pulling him in even closer as their tongues met.

Down the hall, a door slammed, reminding him where they were.

Drake dragged his mouth away from hers, his breathing ragged as he tried to regain control. He had to get it together because he was about five seconds away from doing something really stupid. Like taking her to bed. “I should go.”

Her lips curved into a sexy, flirtatious smile. “Or you could stay.”

God, how he wanted to. But as much as he’d love to spend the rest of the night exploring every inch of her body, he couldn’t take the chance he might go zombie on her right in the middle of sex. Talk about coitus interruptus, And it had already been almost four days since he last turned, which meant he was already pushing his luck.

“You don’t know how much I want to,” he groaned. “But I can’t.”

Simone looked up at him with those big, blue eyes. “Why not?”

“Because I…” He hesitated, trying to come up with something that would sound believable. “I have a column due in the morning and I haven’t even started on it yet.” She knew all about deadlines, so she would understand that. Besides, he did have a column to write, it just wasn’t due until next week. “Rain check?”

She looked disappointed, but she smiled anyway. “Absolutely. How does coming over for dinner tomorrow night sound?”

It would be crazy to agree when he could be so close to having an episode, but he couldn’t say no. Not when she asked in that soft, sultry voice. “Sounds great.”

“Good. Be here at seven.”

“Seven it is.”

She pulled him down for another long, slow kiss on the mouth. “Don’t be late.”

His mouth twitched. “I won’t.” He bent his head to kiss her again, then groaned. “If I don’t go now, I’ll be here all night.”

Simone laughed. “Would that be such a bad thing?”

“Not to me, but my editor at Money Issues might not be too understanding when he doesn’t find my column sitting in his inbox tomorrow.”

She sighed. “Deadlines can be a real pain in the butt sometimes. Okay, go home and write your column. I’ll cuddle up with a bowl of ice cream instead.”

He chuckled. “Sounds better than taking a cold shower, which is what I’m going to be doing when I get home.” He closed his mouth over hers once more. “See you tomorrow night, beautiful.”

Resisting the urge to pull her into his arms again, Drake turned and walked down the hallway toward the stairwell. At the top of the steps, he glanced over his shoulder to see Simone standing where he’d left her, a sexy curve to her lips.

It took every ounce of strength he possessed not to go back and pin her against the door for one more long, lingering kiss. God, what he wouldn’t give to spend the night with her. Man, it was going to take more than a cold shower to get her out of his head.

As a society we still embrace the ridiculous notion that “good girls don’t” while “bad girls do.” What is it they do or don’t do? Sex. Plain and simple. Some of the worst abusers ARE women.

The stereotype and name calling is stirring up a shit storm and bringing into question what exactly is feminism these days. It’s not about women’s domination over men, revenge for past wrongs, or even proving who is better. AND it shouldn't be about slut-bashing. The era of the femi-nazi is over...despite certain factions whining in morale outrage.

We’ve finally, finally entered a time in our society when a large number of women, particularly women in their prime, are becoming comfortable with their own sexuality. They are tossing off the restrictions placed on them by the values of others and making up their own minds about what they like, don’t like and who they want to do it with and how often. What right does anyone have to call women who are discovering their own sense of empowerment and equality, sluts? Think about the mixed messages this is sending to teen girls. No wonder we’re all fucked up.

Like priests who rant against gays while hiding little boys in their closets, me thinks the judgmental protest too much.

On the plus side I'd rather be called a slut than a narrow-minded, shriveled up, judgmental prude. Just sayin.

Recently, the United Nations Human Rights Council dove little head first into the plight of sex workers in the United States. The report submitted by the Best Practices Policy Project, Desiree Alliance, and theSexual Rights Initiative focuses on civil and human rights violations of those engaged, or perceived to be engaged, in sexual trade and sex work in the U.S.

Prostitution is a dirty word, much like Cancer, colonoscopy and Snooki. Cancer is an unwelcomed reality of life. Colonoscopies are an unwelcome result of that reality and, well, Snooki happens whether we like it or not. However, the question of whether prostitution should be legal, even decriminalized, is a moral issue. Sex workers do not sell themselves. They sell a service and are paid for that service.

Agreed, there is a plethora of pros an cons, tangent arguments and a seemingly insurmountable mountain of education needed in order to bring the stigma of those who choose to engage in sex work to the masses for consideration.

The advocates make a case for the humanizing of those holding fast to the oldest profession. Their reasoning "isn't that prostitution is great for women, or that trafficking and abuse aren't real threats. The proposition is pretty sane and simple, from a workers' standpoint: The sex trade, like many other "legal" jobs, falls on a wide spectrum of exploitation within a capitalist labor system. The work itself may represent realities that people find immoral or disturbing. But the people doing the work are more than mere proxies in a culture war; they're human, and that alone entitles them to equality before the law."

Alpha Who? Male Gender Roles

Shockingly little attention is given to male stereotypes in current society. Its as if men have fallen through the crack of awareness with ALL the focus on fixing the female roles. Which should be fixed, don’t get me wrong. There is still a glass ceiling in many industries and women are second class citizens in many cultures. BUT, the neglect in addressing how men are “defined” and how they define themselves is disturbing. Because as the female role changes, so does the male. A sociological imbalance has been created between what is taught to men and what they have to deal with in reality. Remember – we are constantly shaped subconsciously by the gender role messages and attitudes of our media, our education systems, our peers, and our families.

There is a serious catch 22 that is mostly ignored by not only society but by men themselves. The empty well that now exists creates an environment where some men long for the "good old days, when men were men and women were women" as illustrated by the popularity of shows such as Mad Men. But the men are left feeling incomplete and off balance, because of course, those days are gone.

It isn't that the male gender, specifically their subconscious, longs for women to be second class citizens and know their place. (Okay – some here in the south do, but they’re Neanderthals.) To my mind, it is more of a hunger for a clearly defined role in society.

Most women KNOW what we are striving to achieve as women, and if we don’t there are a million magazines, Oprah, and self-help books and studies to tell us. Men - on the other hand have been raised to believe that a real man cares for his family, gives them the good life, blah, blah, blah. But guess what, he struggles to achieve that in a society where women now contribute as much and in some cases more than the male in a family. So where does the self measurement of personal success come from then? The old gender models need to be addressed and not just discarded, but replaced with new measures. Because pressure to succeed as a “male”, to meet societal and familial expectations leads to shorter life expectancy, stress, heart problems, ulcers, alcoholism, crime, drugs, etc. The fact is it is no longer needed or called for. But society has failed to let the males of our culture know that.

Under the Big House - Prison Mythconceptions

American prisons and jails held over 2.3 million inmates in 2008. About one in every 18 men in the U.S. was behind bars or being monitored. The numbers have dropped in 2010 apparently do to reforms in sentencing but it’s still way the hell up there with the largest number of inmates by far being male.

Given the pressure to succeed at any cost, the innate aggressiveness that many males seem to have… and are encouraged to have – it really isn’t a surprise is it? As women step up to a more equal footing in society, the number of women in prisons is rising. Stress, fear, greed, anger, hatred, desperation – these are all factors that can contribute to someone making a bad decision that leads them down the merry road to prison hell.

I’ve now heard several times: the only difference between a convict and everyone else is that we were just never been caught. We all have done something wrong at one point in our lives. Something illegal. Something that breaks the law of the land.

Prison used to be the boogyman land. We were told you went to prison and had to work in chain gangs, survive knife fights, deal with being raped nightly. It was a place to live in terror of because the men came out worse than they went in.

Somehow that changed and suddenly prison is practically a country club, with inmates passing their time with free meals, television, gym, free schooling and no pressure to have to deal with the “real world.” Especially for those white collar criminals. They have plush cells and their own internet. If it wasn’t for the prison gangs still trying to make everyone their bitches, it would probably be a damn fine vacation. That’s why criminals can’t be rehabilitated – they don’t mind going back in. Jail is a free ride for them on the backs of the tax payers. Oh and don’t forget, they all claim they’re innocent.

Guess what. We’ve got most of it all wrong. Maybe it’s the fault of the media, movies, television, word of mouth or a combination of all those. Maybe it’s the fault of fear.

Southern Sage blog is gone, his facebook is closed, his email account deleted. It doesn't look good for finding out how one of my long time friends is doing.
It's karma in a way I suppose considering I have up on vanished online several times on people due to various "issues". There is a real sorrow in losing someone you've known for years, knowing you are unlikely to hear their special brand of humor, delight in their wit and just know they are there for you to reach out to when you need them.

B REAKING TABOO -The PAges Are Stuck Together So We Can't Finger the Remote Control

Last week, the Parents Television Council mis-placed their collective remote control and picked up a GQ magazine. One can only imagine that a soccer dad has a stash of GQ, Maxim and Details magazines hidden in the spare tire compartment of the family truckster. Unfortunately for him, while mommy was vacuuming stale Cheerios from the trunk she stumbled across the stash and discovered, to her horror, that cast members of the television show 'GLEE' were involved in a sexualized photo spread in the latest GQ.

The Council has spoken. Council president Tim Winter claims the photos border in pedophilia and are nearly pornographic. The group is correct in stating that GQ is an adult male magazine. The news is speckled with stories of porn stars who reveal the “truth” about porn. In almost every case they seem to have left the porn industry to either work for a sex addiction clinic, promote a book about the evils of porn, joined a ministry, or in some way ditched the horns for the halo agenda. Really, isn’t that still just selling themselves in a different way? And while most of us don’t sell our sexual talents, almost everyone who works has to sell themselves on a regular basis. So get the fuck over the hypocrisy and holier than thou judging already.

Is it a risky business? Definitely as highlighted by the recent HIV scare. Does it entail dumbassedness – yup – just look at the lack of mandatory condom use. But there is a mix of truths and lies about the porn industry. Which is true and which is false depends on who you ask. So we’re asking Rebecca Lord.

Masturbation is word of the week…month… maybe the year, thanks to dorky O’Donnell. As much as I dislike her ideas, I approve of the dialog that her bumbling has sparked. The word masturbation is shrouded in shame, denial, fear, loneliness and perceptions of perversion.

This is especially true when it is associated with women. Society has created an absurdly contrary stereotype: women who never masturbate and are less than sexually enthusiastic are prudes; while women who not only enjoy some Clit’o’rama but also talk about it and admit to being sexually liberated are labeled as sluts. Granted, most women fall somewhere in the middle of that – they masturbate, enjoy sex, but don’t openly discuss it. The problem with that is silence feeds the misconceptions and outright falsehoods that surround a topic like masturbation. It perpetuates the cycle among the youth as they mimic the shame of the adults around them. Children are told it is abnormal, not natural, when in truth it is very much a natural act. Shame lays the bricks for the tower of sexual repression in our society.

There is less of a stigma attached to men masturbating because you know, they just can’t control themselves, sexual beasts that they are. Medical studies point to masturbation as an aid in preventing prostrate cancer. For women there are apparently no benefits except pleasure. I fail to see why that’s a problem.

I’m told by male friends objectification is alive and well, particularly in certain cultures. Worst case dehumanizes the subject to the point where the offender treats the object of lust with disrespect and abuse. An enormous percent of women LOVE sex. And a growing number aren’t ashamed of it. In fact – women are beginning to celebrate their own sexuality in record numbers. We look at male eyecandy and drool. We nudge our girlfriends and make raunchy sexist remarks about tight male butts. And it’s not because the men are lined up begging to be objectified. Although they are.

Forget all the feminist propaganda and political correctness bullshit for a moment. Women are every bit as mentally naughty as men and objectify men ALL the time. Sometimes (gasp) they even act on it and enjoy an evening of no-strings sex. It doesn't make the women sluts or whores. Just sexually confident and on the same playing field as men.

What we're really talking about are choices between consenting adults with the woman taking the initiative. Truly the how, what and wherefore, are no one else’s damn business. So stop with the judging.

In Sane Artists

I’ve said this many times in discussions, artists have the biggest egos and the greatest insecurities of anyone. It takes giant cohones to think that you can create something unique and original and then put it out there for the world to see and rip apart. Because artists invest so much of themselves into their creations, they also battle vicious insecurities. This stewpot of emotion is spiced by peers who view those artsy types as …well, not quite right in the head. Some critics blame the father of label slapping, Freud, for promoting the theme of artistic madness, but historically, that perception pre-dates his psycho-babble.

Examples of famous artists who have been termed "crazy artists" include Charles Dickens, Virginia Woolf, Leo Tolstoy, John Keats, SylviaPlath, Tennessee Williams, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Edgar Allan Poe, Paul Gaugin, Michelangelo and of course the poster child - Vincent Van Gogh.
Some battled with depression, others with alcohol and/or drugs. But is that a symptom of seeing too much, of perceiving the world differently or visa versa? Okay, so It’s true a good number of artists tend to be emotional. A dispassionate artist is a rarity.
Were they labeled as insane, eccentric or outright nuts by their societies because they didn’t quite fit into the “normal” box of that particular time? Or because they defied convention, had original thoughts and heaven forbid – expressed them? If you define abnormal as the opposite of normal, but normal is something that fluxuates depending on the culture and the point in history – then really who are the crazy ones? Those that live outside the imposed boundaries or those that choose to bind themselves up with them?
There is no doubt that most artists tend to see themselves as somewhat separate or mentally existing outside general society, but aside from playing on the freedom that eccentricity allows, most are not and do not consider themselves crazy. It doesn’t take insanity or depression to create great art. The myth that suffering equals great art is a lie that needs to die. Usually the opposite is true, since critical and original thinking require heightened awareness and the ability to make huge jumps in logic and creative problem solving.
In fact, if you ask most intensely creative people, they will tell you, they are by and far much more sane than the majority of humanity that lives an uninspired existence.

It's quite disconcerting that Lindsay Lohan is continually locked up and forced to wear an ankle bracelet to monitor her alcohol intake yet 'tards like Phelps and his crop of dingleberries can spew fallacies and hatred at a funeral without fear of reprisal due to religious freedoms. More disconcerting is that backwards-thinking, ignorant religious leaders like Phelps and his ilk have hundreds if not thousands of faithful followers who will swallow anything that their shepherd tells them as being the verbatim words and will of God ... with the exception of another man's phallus, unless it is determined that Jesus truly was gay. Then it's going to be an 'every man for himself' melee as Phelps runs naked through the streets of Washington, dingus in hand, aiming to 'Stick it to the man', quite literally.
There is little wonder why many of the world's religions look at Christianity as a blight upon humanity. Not all Christians are bad. Most are fine people, as are their respective pastors. What fringe leaders such as Fred Phelps equate to are the suicide bombers of radical Islam and al Queda, the rock throwers in Gaza and the ignorant publicity-seeking dimwits of politics (Hello, Christine O'Donnell). For now, we can raiseth our hands to the sky, beckon the Great Energy of the Universe to send extra energy to these creatures of mental deficits and hope that the added ampage blows their bulbs. Who wouldn't love for Fred Phelps to be blown.

Technology has made privacy a cherished privilege. It is supposed to be a right.
Where is the line between filming a police officer punching a young girl in the face to posting a young man’s sexual encounter online? It would seem obvious to me. There is a line where respect for the rights of others comes into play. The moral and ethical line has thinned as people forget common decency in their quest for popularity and fame.
There are even Do It Yourself guides on how to make yourself a viral hit online that includes taping someone being injured – cuz y’all know that shit it is so funny on you tube. Yeah but what if it is YOU being splashed across the world? Oh wait – half the viral videos ARE of people making total asses of themselves. I don’t have a problem with that. Just don’t try to ride to fame on the broken back of someone else.

This lack of sensitivity, as well as the psychological distance the internet provides has given birth to a new brand of bullying that is resulting in trauma, hate and suicides. From vengeful posting nude photos of an ex on social media to cyber-spying for frat house chuckles to viciously vilifying someone because of their sexual preferences – it all reflects a growing maliciousness in society.The “do unto others” credo has somehow become “do unto them before they do unto you so you get your fifteen minutes of fame.”

Breaking Taboo - The Misinformation Highway

One of the major disasters of the great information highway called the internet is information laziness. The other is gullibility. We see it in print and we not only swallow it, we regurgitate it and pass it on. Never stopping to consider that what we pass on as fact may actually be nothing but conjecture or outright lies. Being inundated with as much info that hits us constantly in the eyeballs, most people skim, grab and pass. Social media has taken this to a new level.

We have to remember that we are now living in the balloon boy era, where people will lie, steal, cheat, slander and punk anyone and everyone if it will get them a viral moment of fame. Just because the news runs with a breaking story doesn’t mean its all true. A perfect example is the story I did on the Rape-Axe. If I had stopped at the first 8 or 9 stories while doing research I would have passed along the false information that the anti-rape condom is being distributed in South Africa. Only by digging deeper did I discover it was never released. The age of yellow journalism, where sensationalism is more important than veracity, has returned full force.
It’s all about the drama.

So what does it matter if it’s true or not? After all it will be old news in 15 minutes. Welllll – guess what? Libel is alive and well, especially in our litigation happy culture. And people can be sued, for spreading false information via twitter and facebook, in addition to other communication avenues. Social media is technically considered a publishing platform, which means that publishing liabilities, copyrights, and other legalities apply.

As the man says “The world has fragmented into millions – if not billions – of tiny one-man media outlets.”

The moral? Don’t believe everything you read, online or in the news without doublechecking for the truth yourself. And definitely don’t pass it along as fact unless you are positive it is indeed fact. It takes time and is a pain in the ass but do it or it may be your ass that is held over the fire someday.

I love this title. It’s taken directly from a protestor’s sign in front of the Loveland Municipal Museum. We have another case of religious themed art causing the Christians to storm the castle… I mean gallery walls. BREAKING TABOO: The Ugly Reality Behind the Anti-Rape Condom Sensation

A doctor in South Africa created an anti-rape device with plans to distribute it during the World Cup there this year. It hit the international news in a big way.

"Rape-aXe is essentially a female condom with hooks inside. A woman can insert the device with an applicator similar to that of a tampon. Should she be raped, the hooks attach to the rapist’s penis, just in the skin, not deep enough to draw blood. Impossible to dislodge, the device will need to be removed by a doctor, resulting in the rapist’s inevitable arrest."

Sound barbaric? Sound like a recipe for disaster? What it sounds like to me is a desperate attempt to fight back for the 1 in 2 woman who are raped there every year. A woman is raped every 17 seconds in South Africa NOT including child rapes.

A girlfriend who lives there carries condoms just in case she is attacked and in hope the rapist will use it. With the HIV epidemic there, rape CAN be a death sentence for the victim.

And forget reporting it because the cops are as likely to rape you as the soldiers, street gangs, and any number of other males living there that believe the women “enjoy” the rape.

Truth is only 1 in 36 rape cases is reported and only 15% see a conviction. Guess what, Islamic zina (fornication) law applies to many of the women so they’re liable to be whipped or stoned for reporting the rapes.

Despite the media reports, Rape-axe is only an idea, not a reality. Dr. Sonnet Ehlers managed to raise a whopping $120 in donations to distribute 30,000 of the devices at the World Cup. The Vagina Dentata teeth snapped shut on itself. Sponges with razor blades are more affordable to desperate women who live in a daily state of fear. If I lived in South Africa I would absolutely wear one of those anti-rape condoms if they were available and take my chances on the rapist becoming more violent - because living in a barbaric reality calls for barbaric means of fighting back.

Breaking Taboo: Mother Nature's Door Swings Both Ways

Allegations of sexual abuse leveled against religious leaders are becoming almost fad-ish. The Catholic church is noteable for having holy men with a penchant for boys. But recently, Eddie Long, pastor of a predominately african-american Atlanta mega-church was called out by several young men for taking indecent, nay, homosexual liberties with them while acting as mentor, spiritual advisor and daddy-figure.
Now, in and of itself, sexually taking advantage of someone while in a position of religious authority can almost be considered as detrimental to someone's well-being as taking advantage of someone's emotions and fears while in a position of religious authority.

But, at the root of any same-sex encounter is a more pressing question ... one which can be posed applied to God-like, haughty pastors as easily as the seemingly 'straight' married man who decides to frequent restroom glory-holes in search of something which most consider forbidden - a same-sex encounter.
Are all men and women hard-wired to desire same-sex encounters or have we been taught and programmed to believe that same-sex desires, thoughts and encounters are wrong, which in turn goes against human nature?

The increasing frequency of revelations of homosexuality within religious institutions may suggest that, in the end (so to speak), human nature may have the final word, after all.

The Naked Truth of Religion and Art

Rodney Pople has caught the attention of the christian communities with his recent exhibition that depicts a combination of religious iconography and sexually explicit art. The art in the exhibit is powerful and stark - using famous works of religious art and church interiors combined with magazine collages of porn. Visually attacking the corruption in society by utilizing imagery such as women having anal and oral sex, women with legs splayed showing genitalia on altars, as well as an altar boy on the cardinal's lap with genitals partially exposed.

Cardinal with Altar Boy - "in the cardinal's lap - echoing the classic pieta pose of the crucified Messiah - is an altar boy, his genitals partly exposed as he offers his own innocence to the figure of religious authority."

While i have no problem with porn personally, i can't deny that it works well as a symbolic reference to explotation, selling of one's self, as well as getting fucked over by society - figuratively and literally. Pople claims his works aren't religious critiques, which may or may not be true considering the power of religions on society. Some pieces are clearly darts thrown at the catholic church (such as Cardinal and Altar Boy), but given the recent exposure of the church's nasty secrets, it can also be taken in social context.

The outrage of the religious towards art that in any way makes a negative or critical statement is actually pretty fascinating. They behave as though their beliefs will be contaminated by the existence of the art. The outrage is often self defeating since it generally draws the public eye toward whatever they are protesting. I wonder if any of the protesters viewed Pople's exhibition before setting up a prayer vigils outside the gallery or if they protested blindly on what they had "heard" the show was about.

I don't take issue with the religious sects that protest use of their sacred icons in art. It is their right. I do take issue with anyone censoring and demanding that the art may not be shown, thereby trying to dictate what someone like me can view and learn from. The world does not revolve around their singular religious beliefs, as shocking as they might find that. The world is bigger and more diverse than that. Considering the many crimes against humanity that are tied to most, if not all religions, it is only natural that artists - the visual historians and cultural seers of society - should dig down deep into those areas, ripping off the hypocritical facades.

By the way - should you think - well, that's Australia - it has no relevance here... try bringing that show here and see what happens. America is embracing censorship - especially on anything related to religious topics. I wonder if we would even allow the show in the country. After all we have to protect the innocent minds of the population from the naked truth.

If I had to guess at the percentage of hetero males that fantasize about a little ménage action with two women I think I’d be pretty safe to conservatively guesstimate 90-95%. Everyone knows guys like the idea of having sex with two hot women. But bring lesbianism into the conversation and they flinch, scowl or sneer. They lust for some girl on girl, but by goddess the girls better be straight. Not gay. Not bi-sexual. The paradox is mind-boggling. I should clarify – we can lust for a ménage as long as it includes another straight female and one guy.

It’s a Period, not the Bloody Plague

A consumer letter to Proctor and Gamble bitchslapping some marketing genius that decided to put “Have a Happy Period” on each Maxipad got me thinking about menstruation and how it is viewed as something nasty, unfortunate, distasteful and definitely not to be discussed in polite society. Ask your significant other to run to the store and grab you some tampons and pads – some men will flat out refuse, while others see it as a mark of their generous sensitivity for complying. They’re just fucking female products. It shouldn’t be a big deal.

The irony is that menstruation is part of species creation. Without it – we ain’t got no peoples. So why has it been reviled throughout the ages? In the past women in countless cultures were secluded, so they couldn’t contaminate anyone. They were considered tainted during that time – or even all the time due to their “weakness.” Even today – having a period is seen as a flaw, a weakness, a detriment. Can’t have a woman president – she’ll blow the country up once a month. Please. We don’t get any more hormonal and emotional once a month than guys do while watching a football game. And we’re generally appeased with chocolate. Just don’t put any dumbass and insulting smiley faces on our feminine products, stay out of our way, agree to everything we say, and it’s all good.

With all the negatives in society tied to having a period – isn’t it bizarre than once a woman goes into menopause and STOPS having one – she is considered less of a woman? You would think with all the bitching that women and men do about menstruation that finally getting rid of “the curse” would be a cause for celebration. But being the contrary creatures we are – of course its not.

Breaking Taboo Book/Art Pimp: "Naked" by Megan Hart
There is something exquisitely satisfying in reading a story that is so well written, has such magnificently complex, REAL characters that the story digs under our skin and molds itself into our psyche. The first book I ever read of Megan's, "Broken" did that to me too. She writes stories that move me on a personal level, even if i have nothing in common with the characters. The situations, the layers of story have nuances that are relevant and resonate. If you have ever poo-poo'd reading a romance or erotica, i suggest you pick up this book. The brilliant and often humorous use of language will tickle you, while the characters will captivate. Olivia is conflicted, with her past impacting her choices as she struggles to come to terms with the issues she just doesn't know how to resolve so she can move beyond them. Think of society as a scale. The aim of course is to maintain a perfect balance of ideas and community structure. Realistically, individual and group input tips the scale a little to the left, then a little to the right in a constant dance of “this is how things should be.”

It was no surprise to discover that uber conservative Amarillo, Texas is home to an art gallery and theater that is pushing radical, controversial arts into the public eye. The more rigid and moralistically uptight a community is, the more the artists in the community will try to rip back the hypocritical facades and reveal the truth laying underneath. The double talk of so-called community leaders like Reverend Grisham reeks to high heaven. In a perfect example of “do as I say, not as I do” he stated "you have to be cautious about what you promote (in art), because you might prompt a dangerous action based on those ideas." He promptly attempted to burn the Koran during the same damn week.

Nicely counterbalancing that type of religious fucktardedness in Amarillo are stage productions like "The Goat, or Who is Sylvia?" which contains references to incest, homosexuality and bestiality. Incidentally, the work won a Tony Award for best play in 2002.

Hypocrisy and subjective interpretation are common weapons used against the arts – especially art that is trying to show us something about ourselves and our societies. The loosely defined definitions of what is and is not obscene or inappropriate is a double-edged sword. It gives the illusion of freedom of expression while cloaking a giant bitchslap fist that enables individuals to impose their personal tastes and preferences on the creativity of others. Observations that true art that pushes the envelope must stand the test of time and prove itself by “longevity” is moronic and indicative of the nonsensical garbage that art critics spew. Please explain how art that is banned survives the censorship to prove its longevity to the public? But that’s okay. Really. Because artists are society’s rebels and hypocrisy is something we will push right past. We’ll just keep jumping up and down on the left side of that scale, forcing it back into balance.

Breaking Taboo - Blind to the Arts
Art is one of those areas that defies definition but that everyone seems to need to package up into a tidy box whenever possible.

The creative process is still the creative process and whether you're talking about applying oils to canvas or pen and ink to an illustration board - it ALL requires a certain level of skill and knowledge of the craft in order to create something with impact.

So why do people automatically elevate one kind of art while diminishing another? Illustration and comic art has some amazing talent tied to it - with artists that create moving, spectacular pieces of art. But because they have a tag of commercial application slapped on, the works are seen as... less.

Only a few illustrators and comic arts cross the threshold in the public eye from "art for kids" or "art for commercials" to "fine artists."
Norman Rockwell of course comes to mind, as well as Frazetta - illustrators whose works have survived their commercial application to be vied for in auction houses.

Buying into the "its not as valid" myth are the artists themselves.
Part of the dilemma is many refuse to see themselves as anything more than illustrators. But take one of their paintings, put a frame on it, stick it on a gallery wall and the public will immediately embrace it as a fine work of art. The paradox is one that we as a society have created and perpetuate. The problem arises in that when something is dismissed, such as comic art - we (general public) deprive ourselves of SEEING - and the impact and gift of that art is lost.

Douche Bag Island - Pot Calling Kettle Black: Who is Smarter

A Psychology Today article surmises "more intelligent individuals are more likely than less intelligent individuals to espouse liberalism as a value." The article has some interesting points but ultimately -it's a crock of speculative shit. And I say that as a liberal.

The entire hypothesis collapses due to weak conjecture and holes. The author tries to avoid the more liberal women and blacks are therefore more intelligent (according to his hypothesis) by saying race and gender don't count. Uh huh. Everything said could have been flipped the other way and turned into a counter-argument. Anytime ANYONE tries to slap a group into a generalized box and label it as smarter, dumber, better, worse - whatever... it smacks of narrow mindedness.

Trying to clump everyone together into some idiotic neat package reeks of schoolyard mentality. I'm not saying some conservatives aren't dumb as a box of rocks.... but then some liberals are as well. The dumb ones are usually those mindlessly spouting the ideas of others without having thought through their convictions.

Filling a Burning Need

One of the most controversial arts celebrations in the world takes place in the middle of the desert every year. Attendance for the weekend isn't cheap. Admission runs from $300-$360 per person. It's nasty, dirty, gritty with an abundance of drugs, nudity and ... art. Over 199 pieces not including the artistry evident in the Burning Man cars and Burning Man costumes.

With the wretchedly poor economy (and we all know artists are some of the lowest on the income totem pole) why would attendance be up? Over 50,000 showed up to celebrate the unconventional from all over the world. In fact, Africa is starting a Burning Man event as well. Why?

My theory: because as our societies become more repressed we need an outlet and a place where we can gather with the like-minded. Here you have an event that exemplifies freedom of expression. So OF COURSE it is going to draw the artists, as well as those that celebrate their right to think, feel, and enjoy freely - without the hypocritical constraints and standards society imposes. Not everyone in society is content to be told you shall or you shall not. So often it's the artists that push back.

The giant effigy that is burned at the end of the event is said to be symbolic of a letting go - releasing of worries, materialism, social misery. I disagree. I think it's a giant fuck-you finger setting the night on fire - reminding society that while it can dictate it can't control. Not the thoughts and hearts of a people needing the freedom to express.

Attendance up? Yeah - I think more people are crossing that line over to the fuck-you side as cultures become more and more rigid and dictatorial. Excuse me while I go out back and build an effigy to burn...

DAM Arts: Fighting for the Right to Express

Owen Maseko, a Zimbabwe artist, will go to trial next month for painting scenes of the 1980 Gukurahundi uprising, when 20,000 civilians were massacred by government troops. His art reopens discussions of oppression and violence in Zimbabwe. The images have been banned this week under the country's censorship laws effectively shutting down his ability to share his art and ideas with his people.

Owen Maseko says “As an artist for the sake of the whole artist community, I have to challenge the ban. There is no way we can function as artists if we can’t be free to express ourselves. The most important thing as an artist is that we need to be relevant to the society we are living in.”

The Media Institute of South Africa complained that the ban not only violates citizens’ right to freedom of expression but disregards the Banjul Declaration of Principles on Freedom of Expression in Africa. The declaration guarantees the right to impart information and ideas in print and art as a “fundamental and inalienable human right”.

Maseko points out that if it goes to trial it means the police risk having the issue openly discussed and at the same time if they dismiss the case it means they automatically have to allow him to re-open the exhibition and the public can actually see it. The government is attempting to erase portions of Zimbabwe’s history.

But pretending it doesn’t exist, won’t make it go away, instead it will allow the issues to fester. Allowing artists to touch the people - be their voice of anger, sorrow and outrage, provides an essential function in a society. Without it, the voiceless go mad.

Lead Story - The Beauty Sacrifice

Throughout history and in all cultures, ideal beauty is something that has had to be shaped, forced, even torturously crafted in order to be achieved. Brutal sacrifices are made in the name of beauty. What is beautiful in one culture may be considered monstrous in another. It is all as subjective as art. Only a bit more painful in some cases.

Aside from the conscious or subconscious hunt for a mate and peer/societal pressures to be “beautiful” there are also the psychological associations that have been ingrained in us since children. Beauty is often associated with goodness. From children's stories like Cinderella to films such as James Bond, the "goodies" are beautiful while the "badies" are "ugly" or different in some way.

Then there is the hotbed of Muslim resentment and outright hatred that is revolving around the 9/11 proposed Mosque – cultural center – whatever you want to call it. Taxi cab drivers are stabbed for being Muslim (and you cannot convince me that the public hysteria over the topic isn’t core to that stabbing), latino hate crimes that the media report are on the rise, and of course you have continued black/white hostilities all across the globe. Let’s toss in the anti-gay parties for the hell of it because it relates to fear of what is different and we seem to be devolving into a global culture defined by what we hate, not by what we achieve or enjoy.

According to one article when people are economically insecure they tend to be more susceptible to the concept that less immigration will mean more prosperity.

Another viewpoint is that xenophobia rises from the resentment of "cultural apartheid" on the part of immigrants, as well as a sense a sense of cultural and economic entitlement that some natural citizens feel immigrants not only demand but receive. The “us and them” complex that creates an enormous divide.

But is this all a real increase in racism and bigotry, or is it just a heightened awareness of what already existed due to media attention? Personally, I agree that times of economic stress create a need in the general population to find a scape goat to vent frustration on. The frustration was always there though – it wasn’t born out of thin air. It just becomes more vocal.

Christians now have their own sex shops, not only that, but they’re “sin-free” and biblical. Since I belong the Church of Kota with a whopping membership of one, I generally tend to give a respectful nod to the beliefs of others so long as they don’t try to save me from myself. On Saturday a Van Gogh painting was stolen from a Cairo museum. Then it was reportedly found. And now.... it’s lost again. Even the recovery is being fumbled like an episode in a comedic sitcom.

The theft of the $55 million Vincent van Gogh painting in Cairo has the art world casting an incredulous eye at Egyptian museums. Only seven out of 43 security cameras were functioning and none of the alarms attached to the museum’s paintings was working. Apparently the security hasn't been working since 2006. The Van Gogh "Poppy Flowers" is one of 304 oil paintings and 50 sculptures in a collection valued at over $1.2 billion. The robbers climbed on a sofa and cut the picture out of its frame with a box cutter. This same Van Gogh painting was stolen in 1978 and recovered two years later in Kuwait. Egypt may have a little difficulty now in convincing Western museums to return what it considers pilfered works.

Lots of finger pointing included the deputy culture minister being arrested, along with four guards the guards who were accused of “negligence and failing to carry out their employment duties." Nine other officials from the culture ministry were prevented from traveling from the country. It seems that if the security hasn't been working since 2006 that there is a long line of people who fell asleep on the security desk.

How has erotica changed how women view themselves and their sexuality?
One of the quickest growing markets in the publishing industry has been the erotic romance genre. One of the reasons it’s so popular is because it is diverse – covering all other genres of fiction fr om suspense to paranormal to sci-fi to western and historical and even the kinkier BDSM and ménage ala however many the author can fit into the plot.
Face it – we like the steamy hot sex. And other fiction is having to follow the trend of more explicit and sensual scenarios in their stories in order to satisfy the readers. The myth that women don’t like sex is being systematically crushed as the female gender slip into our FMPs and saunter out into the naughty night, looking for some satisfaction. The “good girls don’t” adage has changed to “good girls don’t get caught” and even more so to “good girls DO and do it often.”

What is causing this change in sexual attitudes in women? There are numerous contributing factors, one of them being the fiction we read. Women reading about other women embracing and exploring their sexual needs is allowing a large number of us to toss aside inhibitions (okay – for some more like stealthy sneaking past our inhibitions) as we explore what it means to be a sexually aware creature.

“Exactly why erotic literature has become so popular now is a matter of speculation, though it doesn't seem entirely coincidental that the creators were mostly raised in the era of Madonna videos on MTV, open discussion of sex during the initial HIV scare, and the mainstreaming of porn. Much of the new erotica is simply porn moved to the printed page, only smarter and largely aimed at women.”

An angry group of Iowa parents went on the warpath after a group of students were shown sex acts simulated on stuffed animals. The instructor who is with Planned Parenthood teaches several classes each month in schools and other settings o n topics relating to human sexuality such as sexually transmitted infections, contraception, healthy relationships, reproductive anatomy.
One parent said what had been most upsetting was how the instructor used stuffed animals to simulate sexual acts. And what would she have preferred? Seriously? Were they afraid their 14 year old kids would start humping the teddies? I hate to break it to them but at least half if not more of that class was already sexually active on some level. Even more shocking for the protesting parents - the class learned how to do self-exams for women and the instructor demonstrated with a (GASP) anatomically correct male sex organ how to use a condom. Because putting a condom on an unanatomically correct penis would have been more fun than the school system could handle.
One parent whined: “I do not understand why any adult with a classroom of children would show them sexual positions,”

Still trying to get hands right. Not something that comes easy but i'm practicing... "The Lost Inner Child"

This one is called "Love Isn't Simple Black and White". I was thinking in terms of greys and the complexity of relationships but from comments i've received on this one it can be viewed at a multitude of levels, including racial integration and spirituality. Kinda cool. I love other people's reactions to drawings and paintings i do.

This one is part of the series of portraits i'm trying to do. Ken Meyer, Jr. is a well known artist and illustrator and had sent in his picture when i put out a call for male images to work on from friends. It took several weeks to finish this one in photoshop. He had made a request for tones of purples, so i tried to work that palette into the portrait. It doesn't look just like him, so obviously i need to keep working on portraiture but i'm pretty happy with it.

Breaking Taboo Lead Story - Engineering the perfect baby while preventing lesbianism?

Congenital adrenal hyperplasia, (CAH), is a condition that causes overproduction of male hormones in the womb and girls who are affected tend to have slightly enlarged genitals, though internal sex organs are normal. In boys, the condition leads to early signs of puberty, such as deep voice, body hair and enlarged penis by age 2 or 3.

Parents of babies with enlarged clitorises have been, for the most part, resorting to cosmetic surgery to correct the defect in their less than perfect offspring. As one parent noted in an online testimonial, the defect had to be fixed to avoid uncomfortable questions from relatives and daycare workers. Umm… right.

But WAIT! Clit surgery is no longer the only option! Now pregnant women can take a highly experimental drug that is not FDA approved and not only correct the potentially unsightly uber-clit, but also head off any potential for lesbian leanings.

Working with several collaborators, Maria New has written a series of scientific papers suggesting a strong connection between CAH and lesbianism. CAH, they write, is also associated with a disinterest in mothering, as well as "masculine behavior" in girls. Enter dexamethasone. It's a steroid that New and some of her colleagues believe can prevent some of the outward signs of CAH in girls - specifically, there is a small amount of evidence that it can prevent ambiguous genitals. Carriers of the gene mutation that causes this form of hyperplasia have roughly a 12.5% chance of having a daughter with the condition. The hormone treatment as to be started as soon as possible, before the gender of the child is determined, for it to have an effect on genital development. Remember that the fetus is highly susceptible in its development to any and all chemicals it is exposed to.

With the breaking news on this topic Maria New has spoken up this week, saying that she is NOT attempting to prevent lesbianism. However, given her research areas of interest and statements on her findings, I find that hard to believe.

“In a paper published earlier this year New and her colleagues reported on data from 685 pregnancies in which the condition was diagnosed prenatally, acknowledging the potential effects of the treatment for reducing traditionally masculine behavior in girls. Prenatally treated girls were more likely to be shy, they wrote, while untreated girls were "more aggressive." Moreover, the authors said, failure to provide prenatal therapy seems to lead to traditionally masculine gender-related preferences in childhood play, peer association and career and leisure choices.”

Alice Dreger points out “it seems reasonable to try to prevent a child from suffering discrimination. But an approach like prenatal dex for homosexuality prevention positions gay and lesbian people as the problem to be cured, where we ought to see that it's our society that's suffering from a disease. The medical establishment has long recognized that gay and lesbian people are not inherently diseased.”

This movement to create perfect babies that conform to a subjective idea of what is normal is not just alarming, it is dangerous.

This also brings up a few questions:

1. Since when do doctors get to determine what normal female behavior is?

2. Unless you’re a therapist, what the hell do you care what the sexual preferences of others is?

3. You can’t get consent from a baby for their sexuality to be fucked with.

What gives the parents and the doctors the right to take this choice away from what will one day be an adult woman with a shitload of issues?

In order to relieve these girls from what seems like little more than a cosmestic issue, the doctor cuts out parts of the clitoris' shaft, saving the glans, or tip, for reattachment. The horrors of clitoroplasties aside, this particular brand of FGM adds an extra layer of psychological damage: Poppas used a vibrator to test little girls' clitoral sensation. Q-tips and finger stimulation were also used but don't worry - parents were always present while the children were "stimulated".

The equivalent to this is for a male to have an inch of his penis shaft cut off and the tip of his cock sewn back on. Hmmm... I wonder...Do you think there would be any psychological and physiological repercussions from THAT?

Zombie Cows For Dinner Tonight

“Once all the steaks are gauged for their desirability, the dead cow carcasses from which the flesh was cut to produce the steaks are harvested for their DNA.
This DNA is then used to clone new cows who are fed, raised and slaughtered to see how their flesh steaks taste. This cycle is repeated through multiple generations in order to "evolve" cow clones with great-tasting flesh.”

There is something inherently distasteful about cloning our food sources for most of us. Even if you have no issues with cloning for food, the idea of pulling DNA from something dead to create something living is probably going to give you the willies. Why?

Personally, I think it’s intuitive. We know that as soon as a body dies that all manner of decomposition, cellular collapse, bacteria breeding, etc. occurs. The natural mechanisms in place to keep a living creature healthy are no longer functioning. It’s why a dead body rots.
Granted that is simplifying the process of decomposition and doesn’t take into account a whole lot of scientific facts that probably mean something to someone somewhere. To me, I see a rotting corpse being used to create a living creature that may end up on my dinner plate.

Dig up a little of that DNA and Frankenstein it in the lab and voila – we have duplication of life. But do we really know what we have? It is the lack of real knowledge that should concern people. Statements from the FSA and FDA saying it can’t produce evidence that cloned meat is harmful should be alarming. Use of words in studies such as “appears to be safe” should send up red flags. In a relatively new area of scientific manipulation – saying “we can’t find anything wrong so it must be safe” is clearly decision making based on “acceptable ignorance”. The scary part is that these decisions make the population the guineas pigs.

The meat and dairy industries are big business, cranking out the yummy slab of meat for your Big Mac as quickly and cheaply as they can because, hey – gotta stay ahead of the game and can’t let the Brits or the Japanese get an edge on us. It comes down to greed, competition, and to hell with the consequences. (BP anyone?) And by the way – you won’t know if you’re eating cloned meat because they don’t have to label it as such. Think about this as well - cloned animals tend to be less "healthy." So of course the farmers want to plug them full of antibiotics and hormones to ensure their investment doesn't keel over before its time. There are growing concerns of the long-term effects that these pharmaceutically fed animals are having on the immune systems of humans. Resistance to antibiotics is just one of the possible "side effects" that are being noted.

Whether you are for or against cloning, being collateral damage to industries that are always trying to make the most bucks with the least amount of overhead should make you sit up and take notice. Think about it – they don’t really care if the beef you eat today gives you cancer tomorrow. No one has proven it can, so it doesn’t matter. Ignorance is bliss, right?

No details - just that he's gone.
He was one of the finest poets, funniest men, and most inquisitive minds I've ever known.

Mamie Van Doren, who by the way looks absolutely knockout gorgeous still today, posted an old video of herself on a show called "What's My Line." I've never heard of the show before, but it looks kinda cool. What is truly fascinating is the clear slice of the past it lets us peek at. I'm assuming this ran in the late 50s or early 60s since other guests of the show included Jayne Mansfield, Ava Gardner, Jane Russell.

BREAKING TABOO: The Ugly Reality Behind the Anti-Rape Condom Sensation

A doctor in South Africa created an anti-rape device with plans to distribute it during the World Cup there this year. It hit the international news in a big way.

Sound barbaric? Sound like a recipe for disaster? What it sounds like to me is a desperate attempt to fight back for the 1 in 2 woman who are raped there every year. A woman is raped every 17 seconds in South Africa NOT including child rapes.

A girlfriend who lives there carries condoms just in case she is attacked and in hope the rapist will use it. With the HIV epidemic there, rape CAN be a death sentence for the victim.

And forget reporting it because the cops are as likely to rape you as the soldiers, street gangs, and any number of other males living there that believe the women “enjoy” the rape.

Truth is only 1 in 36 rape cases is reported and only 15% see a conviction. Guess what, Islamic zina (fornication) law applies to many of the women so they’re liable to be whipped or stoned for reporting the rapes.
